A Vasectomy is a simple and quick operation to provide a permanent method of contraception for men.
The tube that transports sperm from the testicle (the Vas Deferens) is cut and sealed meaning that sperm can no longer pass through resulting in pregnancy. Usually this is done under Local Anaesthetic involving a small injection and a tiny opening in the skin of the scrotum – a method known as No Scalpel Vasectomy. Occasionally this is not possible and a General Anaesthetic is needed. Full recovery usually takes 1 to 2 weeks. However, a successful vasectomy is confirmed after 16 weeks when a semen analysis test is done. It’s important to use alternative forms of contraception until this test is completed.
Vasectomy is suitable for any man who feels he does not want any or any more children. The procedure should be considered irreversible, as vasectomy reversal is difficult and has a low success rate.
